How to clean your military backpack?

September 25, 2015

Faithful companion of your escapades, your backpack bravely faces the adventures of your sports activities; sweat, dust or food remains , he will stop at nothing! After spending time choosing your backpack , nothing is more normal than wanting to extend the adventure with it. Here are our tips for maintaining and preserving your military backpack.

1. Air your bag after each outing

Daily maintenance will extend the life of your bag and prevent you from having to deal with long-standing and stubborn stains! After each outing, have the right reflex and remember to empty, dust and air your bag. Let your bag dry and ventilate in the open air, with the pockets and zips open , in a dry place away from sunlight to avoid UV exposure. This could cause the colors of your bag to fade in the long run.

2. Clean your bag by hand with soap and water.

When you feel the need to clean your bag, whether it is to remove mud stains or sweat odors, we recommend that you take the following steps:

  1. Start by checking the washing tips on the label of your backpack. (For bags made of leather or with leather inserts, the instructions may be different from those listed below)
  2. Hand wash your backpack with lukewarm water and non-detergent soap. You can also let it soak for a few minutes before cleaning it.
  3. Scrub the spots with a soft brush.
  4. Remember to clean the back of your bag, the shoulder straps and the waist belt in direct contact with your body and your perspiration.
  5. To better protect and revive the membranes of your bag, you can also use special cleaning and maintenance products for technical textiles, such as the products offered by NIKWAX.
  6. Let it air dry , always in a dry place and protected from UV rays.

Machine washing at low temperature is possible on certain types of bags (see label recommendations), however hand washing, which is more delicate, is still preferable.

3. Re-waterproof your bag if necessary

Over time, your hiking or trail running bag may need to be re-waterproofed. You can revive the membrane with a waterproofing or water repellent treatment, sold as a spray or special soap. Make sure you clean your bag thoroughly before applying the product.

4. Store your bag in a dry place

Between two uses, store your backpack in a dry, ventilated place sheltered from solar UV rays. Avoid exposing your bag to heat sources such as radiators or fireplace.
